Erpeldange Castle
Erpeldange, Luxembourg, Luxembourg
Erpeldange Castle is a historic castle in the town of Erpeldange-sur-Sûre in northeastern Luxembourg.
Its origins date back to the 12th and 13th centuries, when a wooden fort and later a stone castle were built to guard the strategic area where the Sûre and Alzette rivers meet. Over the centuries, the castle passed through several noble families and was transformed in 1630 from a defensive fortress into a more comfortable residence.
As its military importance declined, the fortifications were replaced by landscaped grounds, giving the site a more elegant appearance. After suffering damage during World War II, the castle was acquired by the Luxembourg state in 1983 and restored. Since 1987, it has served as the administrative headquarters of the Commune of Erpeldange, while its scenic park remains open to the public.
