Fetislam Fortress
Kladovo, Serbia, Serbia
Fetislam Fortress is an Ottoman-era stronghold located on the Danube River bank at the entrance to Kladovo in eastern Serbia, constructed in 1524 under Suleiman the Magnificent to bolster defenses against Hungarian campaigns and control vital river trade routes. Comprising a "Small Fortress" from the 16th century with artillery-focused circular towers and loopholes, later destroyed by hajduks and rebuilt, plus an expansive 18th-century "Large Fortress" spanning 14 hectares with six bastions, ramparts, a moat, drawbridges, a mosque, hamam, and warehouse adorned with plaques honoring Sultan Mahmud II. It changed hands repeatedly during 19th-century Serbian-Turkish wars, was handed to Prince Mihailo Obrenović in 1867 marking the end of Ottoman garrisons in Serbia, and now serves as a recreational park and cultural venue.
