Verified Fort Kamičak

Brištane, Croatia, Croatia

Fort Kamičak is a ruined medieval fortress perched on a steep rocky cliff above the Krka River near Brištane in Croatia’s Krka National Park.

Built in the 14th century or earlier, it occupied a dramatic and highly defensible location between Visovac Lake and Roški Slap, giving it strategic importance in the region. The fortress was owned by the powerful Nelipić noble family and later passed through the hands of several Croatian noble families. It is also associated with Juraj Utješinović, a prominent 16th-century cardinal who was born there in 1482.

In 1522–1523, Fort Kamičak was captured and destroyed by Ottoman forces and was never rebuilt. Today, only its ruins remain, but the site is admired for its historical significance and spectacular setting above the Krka canyon, making it a memorable landmark within the national park.
