Fort Nongqayi Historical Museum is housed in a three‑turreted former British fort built in 1883 on a hill outside Eshowe, in the heart of Zululand, originally constructed to accommodate the Zulu Native Police force known as the Nongqayi and to protect the resident commissioner after the Anglo‑Zulu War.

The fort, with its enclosed courtyard and defensive loopholes, later sheltered townspeople during the 1906 Bambatha Rebellion, and was declared a national monument in 1939 before being transformed from 1961 into a museum complex tracing local history from the Iron Age to the present, with a strong focus on Zulu–British relations, wars, and missionary activity.

Today the wider Fort Nongqayi Museum Village includes the Zululand Historical Museum inside the fort, the Vukani Zulu Cultural Museum with one of South Africa’s finest collections of Zulu baskets and crafts, a Mission Chapel museum on Norwegian missions, a small butterfly house, craft shops, a restaurant, and educational programmes, making it a rich cultural and historical stop for visitors interested in Zululand’s past and living traditions.
