Fort Peddie
South Africa , South Africa
Fort Peddie in South Africa was originally established as a frontier post in 1835 during the ongoing conflicts known as the Frontier Wars between British colonial forces and local Xhosa groups.
It was named after Lieutenant-Colonel John Peddie, who commanded British troops in the region. The fort was initially an earth redoubt built in the shape of an eight-pointed star, designed to house a 6-pounder cannon on its walls and defend against attacks. Over time, it was reinforced with stone walls and a square watchtower with additional defensive capabilities.
Fort Peddie was strategically placed to protect amaMfengu refugees who had been displaced from their homelands during these wars. The fort endured two significant sieges but proved resilient against attacks by thousands of Xhosa warriors. By the mid-19th century, it became the administrative center for the division named after it and was eventually handed over to the Anglican Church after British troops withdrew.
Though it gradually fell into disuse, Fort Peddie remains an important historical symbol of colonial military strategy and local resistance on South Africa’s eastern frontier.
