Fortezza di Castrocaro Terme
Italy, Italy
Fortezza di Castrocaro Terme is a large medieval fortress overlooking the spa town of Castrocaro Terme in Emilia-Romagna.
Dating back more than a thousand years, it is considered one of Italy’s finest examples of fortified medieval architecture and consists of three main defensive sections: the Girone, the Rocca, and the Medicean Arsenals. Built on a rocky hill with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, the fortress played an important strategic role throughout the Middle Ages and later came under Florentine influence.
Its well-preserved walls, towers, courtyards, and military structures reflect centuries of architectural development and defensive innovation. Today, the fortress houses a historical and archaeological museum displaying artifacts such as weapons, ceramics, paintings, and furnishings. Visitors can explore the castle complex, historic halls, prison tower, church, and panoramic viewpoints while discovering the rich history of Castrocaro and the Romagna region.
