Fortress
Piancastagnaio, Province of Siena, Italy, Italy
The Fortress of Piancastagnaio, also known as the Rocca Aldobrandesca, is a medieval castle that dominates the historic center of Piancastagnaio on the slopes of Mount Amiata in Tuscany.
Built in a strategic position overlooking the Paglia Valley, it was an important defensive stronghold in a border region frequently contested by powerful families and neighboring states. First documented in the late 12th century, the fortress was associated with the influential Aldobrandeschi family and later came under the control of Orvieto and Siena.
Major restorations and fortification works carried out during the 15th century gave the castle much of its present appearance, including its imposing walls and towers. After periods of use as a prison and years of decline, the fortress was carefully restored and is now one of the town’s most important landmarks. Today it hosts cultural events and exhibitions, while preserving its impressive medieval character and offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s rich history.
