Gaasbeek Castle
Lennik, Belgium
Gaasbeek Castle in Lennik, Belgium, was originally built around 1240 as a fortified stronghold to defend the Duchy of Brabant against neighboring Flanders.
It was destroyed in 1388 by Brussels troops in retaliation for the assassination of a local alderman, allegedly orchestrated by the then Lord of Gaasbeek. Rebuilt in brick over the following centuries, it came into the possession of the House of Hornes in the early 16th century and later was owned by Lamoral, Count of Egmont, a significant historical figure who was executed for treason in 1568.
The castle was further transformed into a luxurious summer residence in the 17th and 18th centuries by noble owners such as René de Renesse, who added ornate park buildings and enhancements.
In the late 19th century, the castle took on its distinctive neo-Renaissance fairy-tale appearance through renovations ordered by Marquise Arconati-Visconti. She later donated the castle, including its art collection and grounds, to the Belgian state in 1923.
Today, Gaasbeek Castle serves as a national museum featuring historical interiors, artwork, and a large park with gardens, ponds, and walking paths, offering visitors a rich cultural and historical experience combined with beautiful natural surroundings.
