Galatone is a small town in the Salento area of Puglia, in the province of Lecce in southern Italy, set on a hillside amid olive groves and farmland near the Ionian Sea.

It has a long history as a Greek and later Byzantine center, with traces of its medieval past still visible in its layout and in the use of the local Greek‑influenced Griko dialect. The historic core is dominated by a 14th‑century castle linked to the Marquesses of Galatone and by the Baroque Sanctuary of the Santissimo Crocifisso, a richly decorated church that acts as a major pilgrimage site and local religious landmark.

Galatone also has three original city gates, of which the elaborate Porta di San Sebastiano is the best preserved, ornately carved in Neapolitan‑style Baroque. The town remains relatively quiet and traditional, with lively religious festivals such as the feast of San Sebastiano in January and the celebration of the Crocifisso in summer, alongside Carnivals and processions that blend religious devotion with folk‑theater flair.

Although it is inland, Galatone includes a stretch of Ionian coast at localities like La Reggia and Montagna Spaccata, giving residents and visitors easy access to sea, beaches, and typical Salentine cuisine and wine.
