The Garden Route District Municipality is an important local government area in the southeastern part of the Western Cape, South Africa. The region is famous for its natural beauty, stretching from Mossel Bay through to the border of the Eastern Cape, and covering both the Garden Route and the Little Karoo areas. The district’s name describes the lush vegetation, scenic coastline, forests, lakes, and mountains found in this part of the country. 

The district covers about 23,331 square kilometers. Its coastal corridor runs for approximately 200 kilometers and includes both urban and rural areas. The main towns and municipalities in the district are George (the largest), Mossel Bay, Knysna, Bitou (Plettenberg Bay), Oudtshoorn, Hessequa (Riversdale), and Kannaland (Ladismith). Towns like Sedgefield, Wilderness, Albertinia, Heidelberg, and Calitzdorp are also part of the region. 

George is the administrative center and the largest urban area. Other towns, such as Knysna and Plettenberg Bay, are well-known tourist destinations with beaches, lagoons, and forests.

The Garden Route District has a diverse population of over 830,000 people. The most common language spoken is Afrikaans, and there are also many speakers of Xhosa and English. The main cultural groups include people of Coloured (mixed-race), Black African, and White backgrounds. The region is urbanized, especially in towns like Mossel Bay and Knysna, but there are also large rural communities focused on farming and tourism.

The Garden Route is famous for its stunning natural scenery. There are protected areas like the Garden Route National Park, Tsitsikamma National Park, and many private reserves. Activities include hiking, whale watching, birdwatching, and exploring indigenous forests. Rivers, lakes, and long sandy beaches make it popular for water sports.

The coastal towns have busy tourism and hospitality industries, with many hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants. The climate is mild and pleasant most of the year, making it a great place to visit in any season. 

The Garden Route is easily reached by car via the N2 national road, which follows the coastline. The towns are well-connected, and George has an airport with flights to major South African cities. The good roads and dramatic scenery make it a favorite route for driving holidays.
