Grisolia
Italy, Italy
Grisolia is a picturesque hilltop town in the Cosenza province of Calabria, southern Italy, perched 480 meters above sea level on a rocky hill with the Carpinoso and Cozzo Pellegrino mountains behind it and overlooking a deep valley.
This medieval village, known as Grìsulia in the local Calabrian dialect, has a historic center that feels like a stone labyrinth with narrow alleys, stairs, arches, and unique supporting structures called “lo spuortu” where houses lean against each other. The town’s name likely comes from a Greek or Spanish word meaning “gold,” referencing the gold that once abounded in the valley below and attracted various conquerors including Greeks, Romans, Normans, Byzantines, and Turks over the centuries.
Grisolia is also a popular seaside resort through its coastal hamlet Grisolia Marina on the Riviera dei Cedri (Citrus Coast), featuring a long beach of fine grey sand with cliffs, restaurants, and accommodations that become very busy in summer. The area offers diverse landscapes from the Mediterranean coast to the rugged slopes of Pollino National Park, and visitors can see notable sites like the Castagno del Salavrone, believed to be Europe’s oldest chestnut tree, and a Norman castle with an ancient church in the town’s highest part.
