The Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens in Betty's Bay, South Africa, is a scenic reserve spanning nearly 200.5 hectares from the Kogelberg Mountains to the sea, situated within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve along the R44 coastal route east of Cape Town.
It features 10 hectares of cultivated fynbos gardens and 190.5 hectares of untouched natural fynbos, showcasing over 1,600 plant species, including the king protea and the rare red disa, making it one of the most florally diverse areas in the world.
The garden’s varied ecosystems include afro-montane forests, wetlands, coastal dunes, and mountain slopes, supporting abundant wildlife such as porcupines, genets, baboons, otters, dassies, and more than 60 bird species, including the Cape sugarbird and orange-breasted sunbird.
Meandering nature trails like the Disa and Luiperd’s Kloof paths lead visitors past waterfalls, amber pools, deep gorges, and forested ravines, offering scenic views and opportunities for birdwatching and photography.
Established from land bequeathed by Harold Porter in 1958 and later expanded with adjacent properties, the garden is managed by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and includes educational signage, picnic areas, a nursery for indigenous plants, and summer sunset concerts.
