Hendrina is a small coal-mining and farming town in the Nkangala District of Mpumalanga, South Africa, located roughly halfway along the N11 between Middelburg and Ermelo, and near towns such as Carolina and Bethal.

Established in 1914 on the Garsfontein farm and named after Hendrina Beukes, the wife of the farm’s owner, it developed as a typical Highveld “farmer’s town” surrounded by maize, sunflower, peanut and sheep farms in what is often called “Cosmos country” for its spring wildflower displays.

The local economy combines diversified agriculture with large-scale coal mining and power generation, and the area is notable for hosting Eskom’s Hendrina and nearby Arnot power stations, which together make the region an important node in South Africa’s electricity supply while giving the town a distinctly industrial skyline.
