Holy Martyr George

Topola, Šumadija, Serbia

---

Holy Martyr George, also known as the Church of St. George at Oplenac, is one of Serbia’s most important religious and historical monuments, located on Oplenac Hill above the town of Topola in the Šumadija region.

Built between 1910 and 1930 by King Peter I Karađorđević, it serves as the mausoleum of the Serbian royal Karađorđević dynasty. The church is renowned for its striking white marble exterior and magnificent interior covered with millions of mosaic pieces reproducing famous medieval Serbian frescoes.

These mosaics are considered among the finest examples of religious art in Serbia and make the church one of the country’s most beautiful sacred sites. As both a place of worship and a royal memorial, Holy Martyr George is a symbol of Serbian history, culture, and national identity. Its hilltop setting, artistic treasures, and royal crypt attract pilgrims, historians, and tourists from around the world.
