The Hortus Botanicus Lovaniensis, also known as Kruidtuin, is the oldest botanical garden in Belgium, established in 1738 by the University of Leuven with the original purpose of growing medicinal herbs for medical students.

Over time, it evolved to include ornamental and economically useful plants for broader botanical study. The garden experienced changes in ownership and function, passing to the city in 1835 while still serving academic purposes. It covers about 2.2 hectares in the center of Leuven and features greenhouses, manicured lawns, and diverse plant collections including over 4,500 species such as cherry blossoms and scented shrubs.

The garden offers visitors a serene environment with pathways, ponds, and seasonal flower displays, maintaining its scientific heritage while functioning as a public park that supports education, conservation, and enjoyment. The orangery and other historic structures add cultural value, and exhibitions and art are regularly presented, making each visit a unique experience.
