Kasteel Isque
Overijse, Belgium
Kasteel Isque in Overijse, Belgium, originated from a site first mentioned as early as the 14th century and was developed into a castle between 1500 and 1550 after the destruction of the old fortress and village by Maximilian of Austria's troops in 1489.
It was built by the van Wittem family, who had acquired the lordship of Overijse in the late 15th century. The castle was constructed at the foot of a hill northwest of the river IJse, using materials from the demolished Hoeilaart castle. By 1550, the castle’s chapel dedicated to Saint George was consecrated, indicating the castle was largely complete.
Over the centuries, the castle passed through various noble families, including the Horn family in the late 16th century and Prince Salm-Kyrbourg in the 18th century.
Confiscated during the French Revolution, it was later converted into a school in 1948. Today, Kasteel Isque is recognized as protected architectural heritage, reflecting its historical significance and centuries-long evolution in Belgian history.
