Verified Kasteel Minnewater

Bruges, Belgium, Belgium

Kasteel Minnewater in Bruges, Belgium, is a neo-Gothic castle built in 1890 based on designs by architect Charles De Wulf for Leon De Wulf.

The castle, originally known as La Faille, is situated on the east bank of the Minnewater lake, also known as the "Lake of Love," a famous medieval waterway in Bruges that historically served as a dock for ships trading goods like wool, wine, and spices. The city council purchased the castle in 1980 and expanded its park to fully connect it to the lake.

Although the original neo-Gothic castle called Het Fraeyhuis, built by Ludovic Fraeys de Veubeke, was demolished in 1969, the surrounding park and some remnants like the porter's house remain. Minnewaterpark, where the castle stands, is now a popular and picturesque green public space featuring walking paths, swan populations, and historic elements that reflect Bruges’ rich medieval heritage and natural beauty.
