Kasteel Pulhof
Wijnegem, Belgium
Kasteel Pulhof in Wijnegem, Antwerp, traces its origins to the early 14th century when it began as a fortified settlement and by the 15th century had evolved into a pleasure estate with agricultural outbuildings.
In 1566 it passed to Thomas Lhermite and Maarten van Ranst, featuring a walled courtyard with round and square towers flanking the entrance and a main building with galleries, a chapel, and corner turrets, while a Renaissance garden once stood to the east. The castle earned the nickname "Verbrand Hof" after the Duke of Parma burned it in 1576 and remained in ruins until the early 18th century, later changing hands among local noble families.
In 1909–1910 architect Ernest Stordiau rebuilt the main residence in Neo–Louis XVI style for the Ackermans family, retaining the 16th-century gatehouse, and after wartime damage it was restored post–World War II. The estate is set within a double-moated park with a stone bridge and iron gates, and has been protected as a monument since 1994, today serving as a private cultural landmark under the guardianship of heritage organizations.
