Kasteel Van Betho
Tongeren, Belgium
Kasteel Van Betho is a historic castle located in Tongeren, in the province of Limburg, Belgium, situated on Mulkerstraat and forming part of the Beukenberg nature reserve. The castle has a rich history dating back to the 13th century, with the first known inhabitant being Arnold van Betu in that period. Throughout the centuries, the castle has belonged to several noble families including the Betho, Huwenial, Oyembrugge, Krafft, Simonis, van Hinnisdael, van der Gracht, and Copis families.
The castle is structured as a castle farm consisting of two main parts: the main castle with four wings surrounding a closed central courtyard, and a U-shaped farm building constructed against the northwestern wing around a second courtyard.
The complex is partially surrounded by a moat along its northern side, with the current pond serving as a reference to the former medieval moat that existed as early as 1267. Architecturally, the castle showcases different historical periods, with the oldest remaining part being the 15th-century southern corner tower built from marl stone in 1478, while the remaining sections date from extensive renovations in the 17th century.
The buildings are constructed primarily of brick and feature slate-covered pitched roofs, with the four corner towers each crowned by small roof riders - three with tent roofs and the southern tower topped by a bell-shaped spire.
The southeastern facade, which serves as the main entrance, spans thirteen bays across two floors, each topped with dormer windows, and features a monumental entrance gate created in the early 18th century by Frans van Hinnisdael, Count of Betho, complete with a rectangular frame spanning two floors and topped by a pediment displaying the van Hinnisdael family coat of arms.
The attached farm buildings, also dating from the 17th century, are built of brick with slate roofs and feature a central arched entrance gate framed in limestone. Today, the castle remains privately owned and is not open to the public, though it continues to be an important architectural landmark within the Beukenberg nature area near Tongeren.
