Over time, the castle served various roles, including a gin distillery, sugar factory, monastery, and Catholic boarding school for orphans and children of disabled soldiers.
Despite its significance and striking architecture—including a colonnade designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Niccolò Servandoni—the castle fell into disrepair and abandonment, eventually being demolished in 2010.
