Kaštel Petrapilosa, also known as Pietrapelosa, is a well-preserved medieval castle located near Buzet in the Istria region of Croatia.
Perched on a high rocky ridge above the Bračana River valley, it occupied a strategic position that allowed its inhabitants to control important routes through northern Istria. The castle was first mentioned in historical records in 965 and later served various rulers, including the Patriarchs of Aquileia and the Republic of Venice.
Over the centuries it functioned as a military stronghold, administrative center, and noble residence. Today, visitors can explore its impressive ruins, defensive walls, watchtower, and the nearby Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene, which contains traces of medieval frescoes. The castle’s dramatic setting and rich history make it one of the most notable medieval landmarks in Istria.
