Kevergem Castle

Kevergem Castle (Dutch: Kasteel Kevergem) is a historic moated castle and estate in the municipality of Oostkamp in West Flanders, Belgium, situated on the eastern bank of the Ghent–Bruges Canal between the Legeweg and the Steenbruggedijk, the old trackway along the canal.

The castle is first recorded on Pieter Pourbus’s Grote Kaart van het Brugse Vrije (1561–1571) as a small, enclosed, moated building south of Steenbrugge, and over the centuries it was held by families such as the de Torres, Metgard, Vleys, de Finale and Van der Vliet, before coming into the hands of the De Blaeuwe family in the 19th century and later the baronial Ruzette family, whose members included a former minister and governor of West Flanders.

In the 1840s canonical Pieter de Blaeuwe carried out major changes, partially demolishing and rebuilding the southern part of the castle, moving the bridge and adding a farm building, while in the 20th century the estate was expanded to the west and a garden pavilion was built around 1910, and today the castle, its 19th‑century coach house and early‑20th‑century pavilion are protected as architectural and landscape heritage as a representative example of an early‑modern moated domain in the Brugse Vrije region.
