La Libertad Department
El Salvador, El Salvador
La Libertad is a department in the southwest of El Salvador, with its capital in Santa Tecla just west of the national capital San Salvador. It covers about 1,650 square kilometres and is one of the country’s more densely populated and economically active regions, combining agriculture, light industry, and growing tourism. The department is best known for its Pacific coastline, especially the popular surfing and beach hub of La Libertad (also called Puerto de La Libertad), where visitors come for seafood, surf breaks, and lively waterfront restaurants. Inland, the area features towns linked to coffee, crafts, and traditional markets, plus archaeological sites such as San Andrés, which together make La Libertad a key zone for both Salvadoran daily life and coastal tourism.
