Verified Lanzerac Wine Estate

Stellenbosch, South Africa, South Africa

Lanzerac Wine Estate is one of South Africa’s oldest and most historic wine farms, established in 1692, just thirteen years after the founding of Stellenbosch.

Originally named Schoongezicht for its beautiful views, the estate was first owned by Isaac Schrijver who planted the initial vineyards. In the early 1800s, the estate developed with the construction of its first cellar and the iconic Manor House, showcasing sophisticated Cape Dutch architecture from the period.

The property was renamed Lanzerac in the 1920s by Elizabeth Catherina 'Kitty' English, after a French general, and she transformed it into one of the Cape’s most modern wineries, setting the stage for its international wine reputation. Lanzerac is notably the home of the world’s first bottled Pinotage, South Africa’s unique wine grape variety, created by Professor Abraham Izak Perold at the University of Stellenbosch in 1925.

Today, the estate combines historic charm with modern luxury, including a five-star country hotel, acclaimed restaurants, a tasting venue, and beautifully maintained gardens, continuing its legacy as a premier destination in the Cape Winelands.
