The Letterklip (Afrikaans for “lettered rock” or “letter stone”) is a provincial heritage site located just west of the small town of Garies in Namaqualand, Northern Cape, South Africa, and it consists of large boulders on top of a hill that are covered with inscriptions, regimental badges, and names of early travelers and military officers. The rock formation was fortified with dry stone walling and was occupied between 1901 and 1902 by British forces during the Anglo‑Boer War, so inscriptions of officers’ names and various regimental badges engraved on the rockface reflect its military use in that period. Because of these inscriptions and its historical role as a projected blockhouse or fortified position, the Letterklip is listed in heritage registers and is often described in the context of South Africa’s war‑era blockhouses and fortifications in the Northern Cape, including other sites such as Leeu‑Gamka and Carnarvon blockhouses. Located close to the Kamiesberg area and the Cape‑to‑Namib travel route, the Letterklip is a quiet but historically tangible site where visitors can see the carved names and emblems that mark the movement of troops and travelers through Namaqualand, combining natural landscape with military and colonial history in one small, accessible landmark.
