The Medieval Tower and Appiani Fortress are the centerpiece of Populonia, a small fortified village overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea on the Tuscan coast.

Built on the site of the ancient Etruscan city of Populonia, the fortress occupies a strategic hilltop position that has been important for defense and trade for centuries. The medieval tower, originally constructed by Pisa in the 12th century, served as a lookout over both land and sea routes.

In the early 15th century, the Appiani family, rulers of Piombino, expanded the defenses by building the fortress and strengthening the walled settlement. Today, visitors can explore the fortress complex and climb the tower for spectacular panoramic views of the Gulf of Baratti, Elba Island, and the surrounding coastline.
