Medvedgrad is a medieval fortress located on the southern slopes of Medvednica mountain, about 10 kilometers north of Zagreb, Croatia.
It was built between 1249 and 1254 after the Mongol invasion of Zagreb to help protect the region from future attacks. Perched high above the city, the fortress offers impressive panoramic views of Zagreb and is one of the city's most important historical landmarks. Over the centuries it was owned by numerous nobles, bishops, and Croatian and Hungarian rulers before being damaged by earthquakes and eventually abandoned.
Today, Medvedgrad has been partially restored and serves as a popular visitor attraction with exhibitions on local history and nature. The site also contains the Altar of the Homeland, a memorial dedicated to Croatian soldiers who died in the Croatian War of Independence, making it both a cultural and national monument.
