Melrose House Museum is a late nineteenth-century Victorian mansion in central Pretoria, situated opposite Burgers Park, that has been preserved as a house museum illustrating the lifestyle and interior décor of the city’s affluent residents of that era.

Built in 1886 by businessman George Jesse Heys and named after Melrose Abbey in Scotland, the residence showcases the transition from Victorian to Edwardian architecture, with features such as stained-glass windows, ornate ceilings, rich carpets, fireplaces, and English paintings, many of which belonged to the original family.

During the Anglo-Boer (South African) War it gained major historical significance when the British military under Lords Roberts and Kitchener used it as their headquarters, and in its dining room the Peace Treaty of Vereeniging was signed on 31 May 1902, ending the conflict and formalizing British control over the Boer republics.

Today, the house functions as a museum and heritage site, with period-furnished rooms, a stable complex, and exhibits related to Victorian domestic life and the war, and it also hosts temporary exhibitions, antique fairs, talks, and workshops, making it both a cultural attraction and educational resource in Pretoria.
