Mileševac Fortress
Serbia, Serbia
Mileševac Fortress is a medieval stone stronghold perched on a massive rock formation with steep cliffs overlooking the Mileševka River, located 7 km east of Prijepolje in southwestern Serbia, strategically built in the early 13th century during Stefan Vladislav's reign to defend the nearby Mileševa Monastery. First documented in 1444, it features a central citadel reinforced by square towers on the east and west connected by walls, additional southern fortifications with another tower, and outposts protecting the monastery, all naturally defended by impassable cliffs on three sides. Captured by Ottomans in 1465 who garrisoned it long-term—renaming the area Hisarjik—it transitioned from Serbian hands under Prince Lazar and Bosnian Tvrtko in 1373 to Ottoman military use until abandonment, now a Monument of Culture of Great Importance with reconstruction plans.
