Montignoso is a charming municipality in Tuscany’s Massa-Carrara province, located about 90 kilometers northwest of Florence and just 3 kilometers from Massa, nestled between the Apuan Alps mountains and the Versilia coast.

The name Montignoso means “big mountain” or “mountain of fire” in Italian, reflecting its strategic hilltop position that historically served as a defensive stronghold and possibly as a beacon for sailors with fires lit on the mountain. The town comprises several unique hamlets stretching from the seaside village of Cinquale, which offers thermal baths, a free accessible Green Beach, and relaxation, up to Monte Pasquilio in the hills, beloved by famous poets like Ungaretti and Montale for its dramatic landscapes.

Key attractions include the octagonal Aghinolfi Castle, a mighty medieval defense fortress with strategic importance near the sea and ancient Via Francigena route, the Church of Sant’Eustachio dating to 1495 with 15th-century paintings, and Lake Porta, a protected wetland sanctuary for rare species including the endangered Lycaena dispar butterfly where swallows gather en masse each autumn before migration.
