The Old Fortress (Fortezza Vecchia) is one of Livorno’s most iconic historic landmarks, located beside the city’s ancient port.

Built between the early 16th century and 1534 on the remains of earlier medieval fortifications, it incorporates older structures such as the tower of Matilda of Tuscany and a Pisan fortress, reflecting centuries of the city’s history. Commissioned by the Medici family, the fortress played a crucial role in defending Livorno’s harbor and helped establish the city as an important maritime center.

Over time, it served military, administrative, and ceremonial purposes, including the proclamation of Livorno as a city in 1606. Today, the restored fortress is a popular cultural venue hosting concerts, exhibitions, and public events.
