Ou Raadsaal - Tshwane
Pretoria, South Africa
The Ou Raadsaal, located on Church Square in Pretoria, South Africa, is a historic building constructed between 1889 and 1891 as the seat of government for the South African Republic.
Designed by Dutch architect Sytze Wierda in Renaissance Revival style and built by John Johnstone Kirkness, it housed the Volksraad, the parliament of the republic, from 1891 until 1902. The building originally had two floors, but a third was added after President Paul Kruger insisted on matching the height of a nearby hotel. It featured modern amenities for its time, including telephones and electric lighting soon after completion.
The Ou Raadsaal also briefly housed the Transvaal Museum in 1892. It has been declared a Provincial Heritage Site and remains a symbol of South Africa’s political history and architectural heritage, now used by the Tshwane Municipal Authority.
