Verified Parque Arqueológico Joya de Cerén

La Libertad Department, El Salvador

Parque Arqueológico Joya de Cerén, located in the La Libertad Department of El Salvador, is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Americas and the country's only UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It preserves the remains of a pre-Hispanic farming village that was suddenly buried by ash from the Loma Caldera volcano around AD 600, leaving buildings, tools, crops, and household items remarkably intact. Often called the “Pompeii of the Americas,” the site offers an extraordinary glimpse into the daily lives of ordinary Maya farming families rather than rulers or nobles.

Archaeologists have uncovered homes, kitchens, storage buildings, communal structures, and even a traditional sweat bath, revealing how people lived, worked, and farmed more than 1,400 years ago. Discovered in 1976, Joya de Cerén is valued for its exceptional state of preservation and the insights it provides into ancient Mesoamerican society. Today, visitors can explore the excavated remains and museum exhibits that bring this unique “village frozen in time” to life.
