Pazin Castle is a medieval fortress located in the heart of Pazin, Croatia, dramatically perched on a rocky cliff above the Pazinčica Abyss.
First mentioned in 983, it is considered the largest and best-preserved castle in the Istria region and has served as a defensive stronghold, administrative center, and noble residence for more than a thousand years. Throughout its history, the castle was controlled by several powerful rulers and noble families, including the House of Habsburg.
Its strategic location made it an important center of authority in central Istria, and the fortress was expanded and rebuilt several times, blending medieval, Gothic, Renaissance, and later architectural elements. Today, Pazin Castle houses the Ethnographic Museum of Istria and the Pazin Town Museum, offering visitors insight into the region’s history and culture.
