Piazza Castello is the historic heart of Montemerano, a beautifully preserved medieval village in Tuscany’s Maremma region.

Reached through an ancient gateway within the village walls, the square is surrounded by stone houses, arches, flower-filled windows, and noble buildings that create a timeless atmosphere. Originally the village’s main gathering and defensive space, the square is linked to the history of important local families such as the Aldobrandeschi and later served as a center of civic life.

Notable buildings around it include historic palaces and former administrative residences that reflect Montemerano’s medieval past. Today, Piazza Castello is one of the most photographed and admired places in Montemerano, celebrated for its picturesque beauty and authentic medieval character. Its charm was even recognized as a filming location for scenes in the 1983 movie Amadeus, and it remains a symbol of one of Italy’s most beautiful historic villages.
