Piccolomini Castle is a striking medieval and Renaissance castle located in Balsorano Vecchio, a historic hilltop village in Italy’s Abruzzo region.
It was built around 1460 by Antonio Piccolomini, the nephew of Pope Pius II, on the site of an earlier military fortification. The castle is known for its distinctive irregular pentagonal shape, sturdy stone walls, and circular towers that overlook the Roveto Valley. Its architecture blends defensive military features with elegant Renaissance elements, including courtyards, decorative windows, and a chapel.
Despite suffering damage in the 1915 Marsica earthquake, the castle was restored and remains one of the best-preserved historic landmarks in the area. Today, it serves as a hotel and cultural attraction, famous for its dramatic setting and its use as a filming location for several Italian movies.
