Provinciaal Domein Puyenbroeck
Lochristi, Belgium, Belgium
Provinciaal Domein Puyenbroeck is a large, multi‑municipal recreational and nature park owned by the Province of East Flanders, stretching across Lochristi, Wachtebeke and Lokeren in the Moervaart valley. The name comes from Flemish words for a marshy area, and the site was originally a low‑lying, wet region with little agricultural value that the province gradually transformed in the 20th century into a publicly managed landscape of woods, artificial ponds, meadows and paths. Today it functions as a day‑out and sports destination rather than a historic castle or heritage site: visitors can walk and cycle through wooded and open areas, use playgrounds, sport fields, a 50‑metre swimming pool and leisure pool, a golf course, a mini‑golf area, a campsite, and an experience railway, and attend events such as festivals held on the domain’s event island. The ponds are designed with shallow, irregular banks to support birds, making Puyenbroeck one of the most bird‑rich provincial domains in East Flanders, and the area is also known for the former castle site that gave the name, though the main attraction is now its blend of nature, water, sport and family activities spread over several kilometres of green corridors.
