Red Nacional de Jardines Botánicos de Colombia

Bogotá, Colombia, Colombia

The Red Nacional de Jardines Botánicos de Colombia (National Network of Botanical Gardens of Colombia) is the organization that brings together botanical gardens across Colombia, promoting conservation, research, and environmental education activities focused on native flora. Based in Bogotá at Avenida Calle 57 No. 61–13, the network serves as the integrating hub for actions that promote research and biodiversity conservation nationwide, uniting representatives from botanical gardens in Cartagena, Medellín, Popayán, Quindío, San Andrés, Manizales, Florida Blanca, Ibagué, Pereira, Uniminuto, Tolima, Cundinamarca, and Bogotá, along with the Alexander Von Humboldt Biological Resources Research Institute. The network's core mission includes creating networks and alliances between Colombian botanical gardens to strengthen the exchange of experiences and knowledge, developing joint proposals for scientific research, and consolidating conservation, restoration, and environmental education strategies for biodiversity ecosystems. Recent initiatives include strengthening conservation strategies for threatened Colombian species, improving the organizational structure of botanical gardens, forming teams to develop a macroproject for conserving the most threatened species in gardens' areas of influence, and creating tourism and environmental promotion strategies that include active community work. The network participated in COP16 (the Biodiversity Conference) in Cali in October 2024, where it discussed species conservation and agrobiodiversity in relation to climate change, emphasizing how botanical gardens act as guardians of biodiversity by preserving seeds that ensure food security and provide essential medicinal plants. Its published resources include living collections, herbarium specimens, and seed collections from across the network's member gardens.
