Rimini
Italy, Italy
Rimini is a historic coastal city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy, located along the Riviera del Sole of the Adriatic Sea at the mouth of the Marecchia River, just northeast of Mount Titano and the Republic of San Marino.
The Romans originally called it Ariminum when they established a Latin colony there in 268 BCE, and it became an important junction for the great Roman roads Via Aemilia and Via Flaminia. Today, Rimini is famous for its nearly 10-mile (16 km) stretch of gently sloping sandy beaches backed by promenades and hotels, making it one of Italy's most popular beach resorts and a major tourist destination.
The city is also renowned for its significant historical monuments, including the Arch of Augustus erected in 27 BCE, the Tiberius Bridge built over the river in 21 CE, the ruins of a Roman amphitheater, and the 15th-century Malatesta Temple designed by Leon Battista Alberti, which is decorated with exquisite pagan reliefs. Rimini served as the hometown and major inspiration for legendary director Federico Fellini, whose cinematic legacy is now celebrated with a striking new museum in the city.
Beyond its beaches and Roman history, the city features a charming historic center with important monuments, authentic restaurants, colorful streets, and vibrant nightlife with clubs and sporting events. The main source of income is tourism, which attracts visitors year-round, though the city also has processing factories and railway repair shops, with an airport located at Miramare and sea links to Ancona, Ravenna, Venice, and Trieste.
