Rocca di Trassilico is a historic hilltop fortress located in the medieval village of Trassilico, near Gallicano in Tuscany’s Garfagnana region.

Perched in a strategic position overlooking the Serchio Valley, the fortress played an important defensive and administrative role for centuries, particularly during the rule of the Este family, who controlled much of the area from the 15th century onward. Historical records connected to the site date back to the 8th century, and the original fortress is believed to have been built by the Porcaresi family before later becoming an important Este stronghold.

The fortress helped monitor trade routes, mineral-rich territories, and surrounding settlements, making it a key outpost in the region. Today, the restored tower and sections of the defensive walls remain as the most prominent features of the site. Visitors come to enjoy the well-preserved medieval atmosphere, scenic walking trails, and spectacular views of the Apuan Alps and the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, making Rocca di Trassilico one of the most picturesque historic landmarks in northern Tuscany.
