Rocca Medievale Di Offagna
Offagna, Italy
Rocca Medievale di Offagna was built by the Republic of Ancona between 1454 and 1456 on the ruins of an older castle to serve as a defensive fortress protecting the city’s mainland territories, especially against expansion from nearby Osimo. This well-preserved medieval fortress has thick stone walls with swallow-tailed battlements and a central keep that reaches about 40 meters high across five stories.
Inside the fortress is the Rocca Museum, which exhibits ancient weapons spanning from prehistoric to modern times. The keep features historical elements like a well on the ground floor and an alarm bell dated 1477 inscribed with an invocation to the Madonna. Beyond its military functions, the fortress is also a cultural symbol of the area, hosting annual medieval festivals that revive historical traditions and community spirit.
The fortress stands prominently on a tuff cliff overlooking the picturesque landscape of the Marche region, offering panoramic views from its battlements.
