Romito Cave (Grotta del Romito) is a significant prehistoric archaeological site located near Papasidero in Calabria, southern Italy, within Pollino National Park.

The cave was inhabited by human communities during the Upper Paleolithic and later Neolithic periods, with evidence of occupation dating back roughly 17,000 years. The site is particularly famous for its remarkable rock art, including a finely engraved image of an aurochs (wild cattle), considered one of the most important examples of prehistoric art in Italy.

Archaeologists have also discovered several ancient burials, stone tools, animal remains, and other artifacts that provide valuable insight into the lives, diets, and customs of early humans. Today, Romito Cave is an archaeological park with a small museum that helps visitors understand its historical importance. It is widely regarded as one of southern Italy’s most important prehistoric sites and offers a fascinating glimpse into human life thousands of years before recorded history.
