Route 62
Western Cape, South Africa
Route 62 is a long and scenic road that stretches between Cape Town and Gqeberha (formerly called Port Elizabeth) in South Africa. This route is known as one of the most beautiful drives in the country and is often compared to America's Route 66 because of the charming small towns and landscapes it passes through.
The road covers about 850 kilometers and goes through some of the Western Cape’s best countryside. As you drive along Route 62, you travel through towns such as Montagu, Barrydale, Ladismith, Calitzdorp, Oudtshoorn, and Robertson. Each of these towns has its own history, friendly people, and local foods. The scenery is always changing, from vineyards and fruit orchards to dramatic mountain passes and semi-desert plains known as the Little Karoo.
Route 62 is also called the Wine Route because it passes through many of South Africa’s famous wine regions. You can stop at wineries in towns like Robertson and Worcester to taste local wines and see how they are made. There are also fruit farms, cheese makers, and markets selling homemade products.
In addition to food and wine, Route 62 has many fun things to do. Outdoor lovers can hike, go mountain climbing, horse riding, explore caves, and try activities like ziplining. The area around Oudtshoorn is famous for ostrich farms and African wildlife. There are also hot springs in Montagu where visitors can relax.
The atmosphere on Route 62 is relaxed and friendly. Most accommodation options are small guesthouses, country inns, and farm stays, which welcome travelers with simple comfort and local charm. Many people travel Route 62 as a self-drive holiday, enjoying the slow pace and stopping when they wish.
Route 62 lets you discover the culture, food, and natural beauty of South Africa’s Western Cape.
