Verified Rumbeke Castle

Roeselare, Belgium, Belgium

Rumbeke Castle, located in Roeselare, Belgium, is one of the oldest Renaissance castles in the country, constructed mainly between 1520 and 1535 on the site of earlier fortifications.

The castle blends Flemish Renaissance architecture with some Neoclassical elements added during an 18th-century renovation that also saw the creation of the surrounding Sterrebos, a star-shaped forest park inspired by Vienna’s Prater. Historically, the site played an important role as a strategic fortress and noble residence, owned for centuries by the counts of Thiennes and Limburg Stirum.

The castle suffered damage over time due to conflicts such as the invasion of Flanders by Louis XIV, the French Revolution, and both World Wars. Notably, during World War I, it briefly served as the home of the famed German pilot Baron Manfred von Richthofen, known as the Red Baron.

Today, Rumbeke Castle stands as a significant cultural landmark surrounded by a beautiful park, welcoming visitors to explore its architecture and grounds steeped in centuries of European history.
