Schengen Castle
Schengen, Luxembourg, Luxembourg
Schengen Castle is a historic castle located in the village of Schengen in southeastern Luxembourg, near the borders with France and Germany.
Its origins date back to a medieval moated castle from the 13th and 14th centuries, although most of the original fortress was demolished in 1812 and replaced by the present manor-style building. Only one of the original round towers remains today. The castle is closely associated with the famous French writer Victor Hugo, who visited Schengen in 1871 and sketched the surviving medieval tower.
Over the years, the property served various purposes, including use by a religious congregation and later as a hotel and conference center. Today, Schengen Castle is an important cultural landmark that reflects both the region’s medieval heritage and its later architectural development. Its location in the village that gave its name to the Schengen Agreement adds to its symbolic significance in European history.
