Schloss Colpach
Colpach-Bas Ell, Luxembourg
Schloss Colpach, located in Colpach-Bas near Ell in western Luxembourg, dates back to the early 14th century when it was originally a medieval stronghold surrounded by a moat. In the 18th century, it was transformed into a manor house after the moat was filled in.
In the late 19th century, it became the summer residence of the Hungarian painter Michael Munkácsy and his Luxembourgish wife, visited shortly before his death by composer Franz Liszt. In 1917, the castle was bought by Émile Mayrisch, a Luxembourgish steel industrialist, who expanded and remodeled it into a cultural hub for notable politicians, economists, writers, and artists between the two world wars.
Today, the castle operates as a medical rehabilitation center run by the Red Cross and is not open to the public. Its surrounding gardens and historic architecture remain significant features of the site.
