Skopje Fortress
Skopje, North Macedonia, North Macedonia
Skopje Fortress, also known as Kale, is an ancient hilltop stronghold overlooking the Vardar River in central Skopje, North Macedonia's capital. First constructed in the 6th century AD during Emperor Justinian I's reign using limestone and materials salvaged from the earthquake-ravaged Roman city of Skupi, it was expanded in the 10th-11th centuries amid Byzantine-Bulgarian conflicts, serving as a key military castrum during Samuel's kingdom and later Stefan Dušan's Serbian Empire coronation site in 1346. Occupied by Ottomans from 1392, it functioned as barracks through wars and a 1555 earthquake, partially destroyed again in 1963, with recent partial reconstructions preserving walls, towers, and archaeological layers from Neolithic to Ottoman eras.
