Vinica's Fortress
North Macedonia, North Macedonia
Vinica's Fortress, known as Viničko Kale, is a polygonal late Roman castrum perched on a hill southwest of Vinica town in eastern North Macedonia, covering about 2,500 square meters with massive ramparts, semi-circular towers, and evidence of continuous settlement from the Late Bronze Age through Iron Age, classical Greek, late antique, early Byzantine, and medieval periods up to the 13th century.
Key discoveries include profane buildings with porches, benches, warehouses, a swimming pool, bath facilities, plumbing, two churches (one single-nave and one cross-shaped with over 100 graves), and unique 5th-6th century terracotta icons depicting Christian scenes like Daniel in the lions' den, likely used in tombs or martyriums along ancient trade routes from Stobi to Serdica.
