Smederevo Fortress

Smederevo, Serbia, Serbia

Smederevo Fortress, located in the city of Smederevo on the Danube River in central Serbia, is one of Europe's largest medieval lowland fortresses, built between 1428 and 1439 under Despot Đurađ Branković as the last capital of medieval Serbian statehood. Spanning over 10.5 hectares in an irregular triangular layout, it features a Small Town (inner fortified manor with a palace, throne hall in Gothic-Romanesque style, massive Donjon tower over 4 meters thick, and treasury), a Large Town (fortified suburb), and outer defenses with 1.5 km of crenellated walls over 2 meters thick, 25 towers around 25 meters tall, moats, and natural river barriers adapted later for firearms. It served as a political, cultural, and defensive stronghold against Ottoman advances until its fall in 1459, suffered damage in World War II, and remains a protected Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance hosting events today.
