Soko Grad
Serbia, Serbia
Soko Grad, also known as Sokolac, is a medieval fortress located 2 km east of the spa town of Sokobanja in eastern Serbia, perched on an inaccessible rocky peak in the Moravica River canyon. Founded in the 6th century by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I to defend against Avars and Slavs, it was captured in 1172 by Stefan Nemanja, becoming part of medieval Serbia where it expanded with a central citadel, dominant main tower, multiple bulwarks, and lower town areas, though much now lies in ruins except the well-preserved upper entrance tower. Later controlled by Turks from 1413, briefly Austrians in 1689, and hajduk Veljko in 1808 before abandonment, it was declared a Monument of Culture of Great Importance in 1982 and remains open to visitors.
